The Lodge was consecrated in 1937 and was formed when men with strong connections with the insurance industry, other professions and the military, who were working mainly in the Holborn area of London, decided to form a new Lodge. The name was chosen from a group of ancient buildings which had survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 known as Holborn Bars. These were purchased by the Prudential Assurance Company in 1885. The choice of a crest (above) represented these old houses and where the original Company building may still be seen at No.142, Holborn, London, ECI.
The original Holborn ‘Bars’ were ancient boundary posts (or small vertical granite obelisks) defining the western jurisdiction of the City of London.
